This timeline traces the history of banking and bank regulation in the United States from its beginnings to the present. In particular the timeline covers important developments and events concerning deposit insurance, including the nineteenth and early twentieth century antecedents to the FDIC; the FDIC's establishment during the Great Depression; the banking and thrift crises of the 1980s and early 1990s; and the Global Financial Crisis and Great Recession in the late 2000s as well as more recent events.
