Information on U.S. OPM Incidents

In June 2015, OPM announced two incidents in which personally identifiable information for millions of current and former government employees may have been compromised.

OPM has already notified individuals who may have been impacted by an incident announced on June 4, through its contractor CSID. The notification letter provides information on how impacted individuals are automatically covered by identity theft insurance and may sign up for 18 months of free credit and identity theft monitoring services through CSID. OPM has described employees that could have been impacted by the June 4 incident as those who move from one agency or organization to another; those who separated from an organization; those who retired from an organization; and those who were employed when an organization changed its payroll service center, such as the FDIC did in 1987.

Current and former employees who believe they meet the characteristics of the June 4 incident, but do not recall receiving a notification, can contact OPM/CSID directly at 844-777-2743 for assistance. Notifications contain a unique PIN code, which is needed to sign up for the free credit and identity theft monitoring services. When you call, select the option for individuals who are calling because they have lost their PIN code or because they want to know whether they are affected. You will be routed to a separate center that is exclusively dedicated to looking up PIN codes and answering those questions.

OPM initially announced on June 18 a second incident involving the breach of background investigation information that has the potential to impact significantly more individuals. OPM provided additional information regarding this incident on July 9, indicating that the main characteristic of employees impacted by the background investigation incident is that they had a background check, either initially during the hiring process or routine, reoccurring background checks during their employment history. Notification to those individuals has not yet been sent by OPM. Once notified, those individuals will be provided credit monitoring and identity theft insurance for three years. OPM has created a dedicated website with information regarding the incidents: https://www.opm.gov/cybersecurity/.
