I oppose the FDIC's proposal to allow banks with assets above $250 million
to be examined as small banks under the Community Reinvestment Act. This
policy would reduce lending, investments and services in low-income
communities.
I am extremely disturbed at the prevailing practice of allowing industries
to monitor and regulate themselves. Large institutions, organizations, and
corporations have repeatedly shown they cannot be entrusted with this
responsibility. Banks simply will not invest in the communities in which
they are located if they have no compelling reason to do so. Please do not
turn your backs on our struggling neighborhoods by denying them yet another
of the programs that have helped us rebuild our communities.
