Joining forces with federal, state and local organizations, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) will help launch the third annual National Consumer Protection Week (NCPW), taking place February 5 - 10. The event will focus on predatory lending and other abusive lending practices, and highlight nationwide consumer protection and education efforts in these areas.
"The FDIC is proud to be a partner in this year's National Consumer Protection Week campaign and to share in its message," said FDIC Chairman Donna Tanoue. "Predatory lending can harm not only individuals, but financial institutions and communities as well." Congress created the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in 1933 to restore public confidence in the nation's banking system. The FDIC insures deposits at the nation's 10,101 banks and savings associations and it promotes the safety and soundness of these institutions by identifying, monitoring and addressing risks to which they are exposed. FDIC press releases and other information are available on the Internet via the World Wide Web at www.fdic.gov and may also be obtained through the FDIC's Public Information Center (800-276-6003 or (703) 562-2200). |
