America Saves Week

America Saves Wekk February 25 - March 2, 2013

America Saves Week aims to raise awareness of the need to save money, reduce debt and build wealth. This is a great opportunity for families to take action by starting a savings account and the habit of savings. Regional FDIC Events in Support of America Saves Week Include:

February 6

The FDIC and the Conference of State Bank Supervisors co-hosted a national webinar for staff at financial institutions responsible for organizing and implementing the America Saves Week. The webinar provided steps on how to implement a successful Week. This was the second of two webinars for financial institutions. Slide presentation (PDF 1.85 MB)

February 15

FDIC staff helped present educational information on children’s savings to an assembly of 158 second-graders at Crestview Elementary in Covington, TN. This was in conjunction with the University of Tennessee Extension Service, Tipton County, TN as part of their Tennessee Saves activities.

FDIC exhibited at the National Guard Bureau’s Military Saves Day at Arlington Station in Arlington, VA.

February 21

FDIC staff presented at the “Youth Money Smart Program Workshop,” sponsored by Kingdom ICDC, to over 50 high school students.  The Money Smart “Pay Yourself First” module was discussed, and students were referred to the Money Smart Computer Based Instruction version.

February 25-March 2

FDIC will promote financial education by partnering with United Way through America Saves Kansas City through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites in the Kansas City metro area.

FDIC, Amarillo, TX Independent School District (ISD), Bob and Yphon LaRoche Charitable Fund, Happy State Bank, and the US Treasury are collaborating together to help support an elementary school program that offers financial education and savings accounts to students.  A $25 seed grant will be provided to students. The goal is to help students learn important financial skills, including saving money and spending wisely.

FDIC will conduct workshops titled “Saving in College” at Paul Quinn College in Dallas, TX and Cedar Valley College in Lancaster, TX.

FDIC will participate in the Prosperity Works, NM Assets Consortium. Participants take the Money Smart class online and discuss their experience on social media.  Every Wednesday, they can watch one of their fellow IDA participants talk about their experience with Money Smart.

FDIC is working with its Alliance for Economic Inclusion (AEI) members across the country to help bring visibility and awareness to their America Saves Week activities. Activities include distributing flyers and materials and helping repurpose existing resources for community stakeholders to disseminate through social media.

FDIC will distribute Money Smart materials, CDs, and brochures to consumers on saving and financial education at the “Great American Treasure Chest” in Jackson, MS. It will be sponsored by AEI Partners - MS Extension Service, Jackson Medical Mall, and United Way VITA.

FDIC will present a savings activity to the fourth grade class at the North Sumter Junior High School, Panola AL (Sumter County combined elementary and middle school).

FDIC will conduct a presentation on “Savings and Budgeting” during the school assembly program at Greene County High School, Eutaw, AL.
