It is a line chart that shows the percentage of savings institutions with net interest margins (NIMs) of less than 3.5 percent, 3.5 percent to 4 percent, and 4 percent to 4.5 percent, from 1985 through 2001. In 1985, 74 percent of these institutions had NIMs of less than 3.5 percent. By 1994, only 15 percent of these institutions had such low NIMs, but the percentage has risen steadily since then. In 2001, 48 percent of these institutions had NIMs of less than 3.5 percent.
