This chart shows the number and percentage change in manufacturing jobs from the second quarter of 2000 to the second quarter of 2001. The largest number of jobs (70,000) were lost in the textile industry, which was down 22.5 percent. The apparel industry was down about 10 percent, losing 10,000 jobs. The lumber, furniture, and electronic equipment industries lost 1,000 to 5,000 jobs each (1 percent to 5 percent). Industrial machinery, computer equipment, and transportation equipment gained 8,000 to 10,000 jobs each, up 8 percent to 10 percent.
