Vol. 8 No. 3 - Article II - Published: February 1996 - Market Share by the Numbers - Foot Notes

Reps and Warranties
by Penelope Moreland-Gunn, Pete J. Elmer and Timothy J. Curry

Footnote 1
FFIEC, Consolidated Reports of Condition and Income - Instructions. The 1995 instructions are more specific than the 1994 instructions concerning some of the items that should be included.

Footnote 2
Lipper Analytical Services, Inc., which is a major user of the methodology described in this paragraph, classifies Brown Brothers, Harriman a private banking firm, as a bank-related entity. Because Brown Brothers is not a national or state-chartered bank, they do not file Call Reports, thereby resulting in another source of variation across studies.

Footnote 3
Because many banks and thrifts that are not affiliated with Mellon Bank offer Dreyfus funds to their customers, these sales will be double counted in the Call Report data.
.

Footnote 4
The total of all mutual fund and annuity (1995 first-quarter annuity sales totaled $3,907,084,000; second-quarter annuity sales totaled $3,909,466) sales that were of proprietary products. These data were not reported in 1994.
